Yearning for Yunnan, Welcoming Global Guests — Joining Hands with Malaysia to Build a New Landscape of the World’s Garden

On September 18, the 24th China Kunming International Flower Exhibition & IFEX Kunming International Horticulture Exhibition, 2026 Yunnan Coffee Exhibition and 2026 Yunnan Tea Expo opened in Kunming. Centered on the theme of “Yearning for Yunnan, the Garden of the World”, the exhibition created a new joint‑exhibition model covering five plateau‑characteristic industries: flowers, coffee, tea, tropical plants and small berries. It attracted merchants from multiple countries, with a Malaysian delegation coming to Kunming for exhibition visits and business matching, fully demonstrating Yunnan’s agglomeration advantages in characteristic agriculture and its vitality of opening‑up.

Zhao Liangping, Vice President of China Flower Association; Hozid, Minister of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in China; Danny Cruz, Minister of the Embassy of the Republic of Colombia in China; and Chen Ping, Vice Governor of Shandong Province attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. Wang Xueqin, Vice Governor of Yunnan Province, addressed the ceremony and announced the official opening.

With a total exhibition area of 80,000 square meters, the event brought together more than 850 flower, coffee and tea enterprises from 21 countries across the world as well as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions. Some 41,000 professional purchasers from 102 countries gathered in the Spring City, with delegations from Malaysia, Spain, India, Nepal, Russia and other countries visiting the show. Industry experts from 16 provincial‑level regions nationwide and over 4,000 industrial‑chain practitioners from 41 major‑producing counties and districts across 7 prefectures and cities in Yunnan took part in the event, setting new records for exhibition scale and industry enthusiasm.

Yunnan’s signature flower varieties including roses, lilies and amaryllis were on full display, alongside numerous new varieties and technologies. The 30,000‑square‑meter smart agriculture zone showcased modern agricultural equipment such as intelligent irrigation, flower sorting and AI‑powered environmental regulation. Coffee hand‑brewing and cupping competitions were held concurrently to boost cross‑industry integration of flowers, coffee and tea, and build immersive industrial exchange scenarios.

The exhibition innovatively adopted the “two guest countries + one guest province” format. Leveraging Yunnan’s geographic edge as a radiation center for South and Southeast Asia, it deepened cross‑border industrial exchanges with Malaysia. The Netherlands and Colombia served as guest countries, and Shandong Province as the guest province, opening up channels for matching domestic and international industrial resources. The Netherlands sent a large delegation of 26 horticultural enterprises to present full‑chain flower technologies and host special seminars on variety‑right protection and smart horticulture. Shandong brought featured products such as peonies, Pingyin roses and alpine azaleas. Through special promotion sessions and signing ceremonies, it strengthened flower‑industry cooperation between Shandong and Yunnan.

Seed‑industry innovation was a major highlight. A public‑naming campaign for new rose varieties and a competition for premium new cut‑flower varieties were organized. Seventy entries competed on‑site, featuring Yunnan‑bred rose cultivars including “Jiaohua”, “Songsheng”, “Huijia” and “Qixi”, which demonstrated the independent innovation capacity of Yunnan’s flower seed industry.

Twenty‑eight industrial events were held alongside the exhibition. A special zone for Yunnan flower‑export enterprises was set up, and the “Yunnan Flowers Going Global” international production‑and‑marketing matching event was staged. Customs, taxation and other authorities provided policy support for export‑oriented enterprises. Malaysian purchasers held on‑site negotiations, helping Yunnan’s flowers, tea and coffee seize opportunities in Southeast Asian markets and further expand the global network of Yunnan’s plateau‑characteristic agricultural products.
